For some odd reason, mat_antialias will trigger a screen resolution reset restoring the graphics state from what I understand. You have to bind two of them like the example because the game will only reset your graphics state if the value is different from before. Paste both of those commands into the console. The rim light, or back light, illuminated the subject from the back. It is softer and dimmer than the key light. The fill light lights up the shadows that are casted from the key light.
